Overview
Proportional control is used in practically every instance where accurate temperature control is required.
This means that power is applied to heating elements in short bursts of energy, their duration being proportional to the amount of heating energy required to maintain a constant temperature.
To achieve this accurate control, power is applied to the elements using solid state devices such as thyristors or solid state relays.
It is not uncommon for these devices to fail (and indeed electro-mechanical if used).
Unfortunately this failure generally results in a short circuit condition, applying full continuous uncontrolled power to the heating element, with sometimes-disastrous results to machine, product and even human operators.
This problem is common on Plastic Injection Moulding machinery, particulary
in the injection heater zone area.
Solution
The ideal way to prevent damage as described above would be to monitor the power being applied to the heating elements and quickly detect when an abnormal situation occurs, and take appropriate action.
